So much has happened since we burst onto the scene just 2 weeks ago! So we thought it might be useful to take stock and review what has happened so far. A blog feels like a sensible home for this, and we will continue to add posts when we have news to share. They won’t all be as long as this one…!
Show the Salary was born! A website and a Twitter feed with one aim: to end salary secrecy in the charity sector. The approach we took was a very simple one. We found job ads where salary wasn’t disclosed (“competitive” or “disclosed at application” are way too common for our liking!) and politely asked the charity, and agency if they were using one, to consider changing the advert to include a salary. We often pointed them in the direction of relevant studies to highlight how practices at point of recruitment can impact on diversity and perpetuate wage gaps – and, in some cases, flagged how this was in direct opposition to statements of intent on their own websites.
Our first press coverage! Civil Society shared the news of our arrival on the campaigning scene. We also had our first big win: British Red Cross acted swiftly and graciously on our feedback and updated the listing for their Executive Director of International role to include a salary. High fives all round!
Work was well underway behind the scenes and our first 3 agencies signed our pledge to always #ShowTheSalary for roles they advertise. More followed over the next few days. Further sector press came too courtesy of UK Fundraising
We were finally able to announce our inaugural pledgers:
Choose Love updated their Creative Director job advert to #ShowTheSalary – as did Ramblers for their CEO role
We were also delighted to announce our second tranche of pledgers.

All in all this felt like great progress for week 1!
Another day, another win… or three. Sightsavers updated their Research Associate role to #ShowTheSalary, and both TPP Recruitment and Small Charities Coalition joined the pledge.
The Institute of Fundraising indicated that they were keen to engage in the conversation around #ShowTheSalary and that they would host an open forum to represent different viewpoints. We welcomed their response and waited for further information.
Meanwhile the Association of Fundraising Professionals announced that, not only will they always #ShowTheSalary on their own jobs (which they have been doing for 2 years) but soon ALL jobs that they advertise for partners must include a salary. An impressive display of leadership from influential sector colleagues.

The call went out for people to share their stories. We wanted to make sure voices were heard and the impact of salary secrecy on individuals.
We were also delighted when St Barnabas House updated their Director of Finance role to #ShowTheSalary!
So that’s the first two weeks! It’s pretty huge, when we look back to see what has been achieved. But we are under no illusions – these successes belong to everyone who has championed us. On Twitter we had over 1,000 followers in the first 2 weeks – and our tweets were seen an amazing 250,000 times! So to everyone who follows us, shared our message, flagged jobs to us, directly asked charities and agencies to make a change: THANK YOU. We are so pleased to have a wonderful network with us, helping tip the scales and create a fairer, more inclusive jobs market – and we literally couldn’t do this without you all.
