When we launched this campaign a year ago, we had no idea what the response would be like.
We had one clear goal, to shift the dial on salary secrecy in the charity sector.
Over the past year, hundreds of organisations have signed our pledge to always #ShowTheSalary when they recruit. Many have added salaries to roles we challenged and changed their policies on salary transparency. Over 8,600 of you have followed the account on Twitter, amplifying the message and driving genuine change. And thousands of roles every year are now guaranteed to #ShowTheSalary as a result of your actions. The dial has definitely shifted.
And beyond that, new campaigns have sprung up in other sectors and countries. And non-profits as far away as the USA, Canada and New Zealand have signed the pledge. This isn’t just a UK issue and the movement is spreading internationally. It’s more than we could’ve ever hoped.
The ultimate test for any movement, is whether it can carry on driving forward with its own momentum and continue delivering real change.
That’s happened in earnest over the past few months as we’ve had to take a step back. The pandemic has been difficult for us all in different ways, and personal news means that we haven’t been able to keep on top of the Show The Salary accounts. We’re sorry for dropping our social, website and emails but these other bits have had to come first.
We’ve been thinking about the best way forward, and we are now handing over the reigns to a new set of folk passionate about ending discriminatory recruitment practices in the sector. We don’t know what direction they’re going to take it, so you might notice some changes, but we trust they’re going to keep holding the sector to account and drive the change that’s so overdue.
This was never about the people behind this campaign. It’s about all of us, as individuals, standing up for the rights of everyone to access a fair wage. To directly challenge those organisations that willingly perpetuate pay gaps. And to ensure the sector is a fairer place for us all. So we hope you’ll back the new folk behind Show The Salary, and bear with them while they set up behind the scenes.
All that’s left to say is thank you. Thank you to all of you who have supported, to the charities who have signed the pledge and to all those who have engaged in conversation with us. Thank you.
